RICHARD MILLS was born in Pennsylvania in 1834. Following school he learned the saddlery business. When the War of the Rebellion broke out, he joined the 100th Pennsylvania Round Heads as a musician and later served in the Navy. When he moved to Albert Lea in 1870, he opened a harness making business on the corner of William and Newton Streets. He formed the first and in Albert Lea, calling it the Albert Lea Cornet Band, and then led the parade when Colonel Albert Miller Lea came to town.
